I Keep Finding Roaches in My Shady Hills Home. Where Are They Coming From?
You’ve wiped down the counters, checked under the appliances, maybe sprayed every crack you could find. And yet you’re still seeing them. One running across the kitchen floor at night. One near the bathroom sink. A couple more behind the stove when you finally pulled it out. If you’ve just moved to Shady Hills or you’ve been here a while and this feels like it never fully goes away, there’s a reason for that and it has nothing to do with how clean your house is.
The Two Roaches You’re Most Likely Dealing With
In Shady Hills the roach situation almost always comes down to one of two species and they require completely different approaches, which is part of why store bought sprays feel like they work for a few days and then stop.
American cockroaches are the big ones. Most people around here call them palmetto bugs which doesn’t make them any less of a roach. They come in from outside through gaps around pipes, drains, the gap under a door that doesn’t quite seal, anywhere they can squeeze through. They typically arrive on secondhand furniture, in boxes, in grocery bags or on anything that spent time somewhere they were already established. Once they’re in a kitchen they find a spot behind the refrigerator, inside the dishwasher motor housing, under the sink or in the wall void behind the cabinets and they start reproducing. By the time you see one in the open during the day the population behind your walls is already significant.
Why the Spray Isn’t Working
If you’re seeing roaches and you’ve already sprayed, here’s what happened. The spray killed the ones it directly contacted and probably gave you a few days of relief. Then they came back.
Contact sprays don’t reach inside wall voids, behind appliances or into the cabinet joints where roaches actually live and breed. You’re killing the ones that were out in the open when you sprayed. The colony itself is untouched. New workers replace the ones you killed within days and the cycle starts over.
Foggers and roach bombs make this worse in a specific way. They send roaches deeper into hiding, sometimes into new areas of the home they weren’t in before, and the chemical clears before it reaches anywhere meaningful. People use a fogger, see improvement for a few days and then have the problem come back more spread out than it was before. This is one of the most common things we see in Shady Hills homes that had a roach problem and tried to solve it themselves first.
Why Shady Hills Specifically Makes This Harder
The larger lots, older construction in some parts of the area and the proximity to wooded green space all work against you when it comes to American cockroaches. There are simply more of them out there and more ways for them to find their way in. A gap around a pipe that might not matter in a newer development matters a lot when you’re backing up to heavy tree cover and natural ground debris.
The seasonal rain pattern here is also a factor. The treatment for American cockroaches focuses on the exterior of the home, finding and sealing entry points and applying residual products around the perimeter and at the spots they’re using to get inside. The treatment for German cockroaches focuses entirely on the interior, specifically the kitchen, using professional grade gel bait placed in the exact spots they feed, which gets carried back into the colony and eliminates it from the inside out.
Doing the wrong treatment for the species you have is one of the main reasons people spend money on pest control and still have roaches three weeks later. A can of spray applied to the exterior doesn’t do anything about a German cockroach colony living behind your refrigerator. And an interior bait treatment doesn’t seal the gap under your back door that American cockroaches are walking through every night.
