Where Are All These Roaches Coming From in My Spring Hill Home?
You are not finding just one anymore. You are finding them regularly. In the kitchen at night. Under the bathroom sink. One ran across the living room floor last week. You have sprayed, you have cleaned and they keep showing up. You want to know where they are actually coming from because whatever you have been doing is not working and you are tired of playing whack a mole with a can of Raid.
Here is where they are actually coming from.
The Two Very Different Answers Depending on Which Roach You Have
The answer to where roaches are coming from depends entirely on which species you are dealing with and most homeowners do not know which one they have. The source is completely different for each one and treating the wrong source is why most DIY roach efforts fail repeatedly.
American cockroaches, the big reddish brown ones everyone in Spring Hill calls palmetto bugs, come from outside. They live in the moist organic material around your home. Mulch beds, leaf piles, under debris near the foundation, around palm trees and in the soil near your exterior walls. They get inside through gaps around pipes where they enter the foundation, through drains, under doors that do not seal well and through any other opening at the base of your home. Every American cockroach you find inside came from somewhere outside and found a way in.
German cockroaches, the small light brown ones with two dark stripes on their back, come from inside. They do not have an outdoor source you can eliminate. They live and breed entirely within your home, behind appliances, inside cabinet walls, under sinks and in every warm dark space throughout your kitchen. They arrived at some point, possibly in a grocery bag, on used furniture or appliances, from a neighboring unit if you live in a multifamily building or through any number of other ways and they have been establishing themselves inside your home ever since.
The Most Common Entry Points for American Cockroaches in Spring Hill
The gap around the pipe under your kitchen sink where it goes through the cabinet floor is one of the most common entry points in Spring Hill homes. Pipes entering through the foundation create gaps that are rarely fully sealed and American cockroaches use them regularly. Check every pipe penetration under your sinks, behind your washing machine and anywhere else pipes enter through the floor or walls.
Floor drains and shower drains are another common entry point. American cockroaches live in the sewer system and drainage infrastructure throughout Hernando County and they travel up through drains into homes. If you are finding large roaches near your bathroom or laundry room floor drains that is often where they are coming in.
The gap under exterior doors that do not have a tight door sweep is a surprisingly common entry point. A gap of just a few millimeters at the bottom of a door is enough for an American cockroach to squeeze through. Check every exterior door in your home and make sure the door sweep is making solid contact with the threshold.
Why German Cockroaches Are Harder to Track to a Source
German cockroaches do not have a single entry point you can seal. They are already inside and they have been spreading through the interior of your home since they arrived. Their source is wherever they first established themselves which is almost always somewhere in or near the kitchen.
The back of the refrigerator where the motor generates heat is one of the most common nesting spots. The area behind and under the stove, the space between the stove and the adjacent cabinet, the inside of the cabinet under the kitchen sink and the back corners of lower kitchen cabinets are all common German cockroach nesting areas. They stay close to food and moisture which is why they concentrate in the kitchen and spread from there.
If you are finding small roaches in rooms other than the kitchen the population has been established long enough to have spread beyond the original nesting area. At that point the source is multiple locations throughout the home rather than one spot you can identify and treat.
Why Store Bought Spray Is Not Working
Roach spray kills the ones it contacts directly. It does nothing about the ones inside the walls, behind appliances and in every other hiding spot that the spray never reaches. For American cockroaches spray kills the visitors but doesn’t seal the entry points they’re using. For German cockroaches spray scatters the population further through the home and makes the infestation harder to treat rather than easier.
Professional roach treatment uses gel baits for German cockroaches that get carried back to the colony and eliminates it from the inside out, combined with treating the entry points and nesting areas that spray never reaches. For American cockroaches professional treatment addresses the perimeter, seals the entry points and treats the exterior conditions drawing them toward your home.
